There has been a lot of talk recently about the effects of everyday human activities having such a negative effect on our planet – and rightly so. After participating in the recent Earth Hour, our staff here at Reconnected thought it might be a good idea to help our clients do their part too.
Firstly, a simple measure, if you don’t need your computer to be on, switch it off after use. If your computer does need to be kept on, there are ways that you can minimise its power consumption. Why not have your monitor automatically switch off after 10 minutes of no activity, or have your system go into stand-by mode soon after you have left your desk.
Do not depend on your screen saver as an energy saver. The average desktop computer, not including the monitor, consumes from 60 to 250 watts a day. The carbon impact would be even greater. Shutting it off would reduce the machine’s CO2 emissions 83%.
Did you know that Australians send 34 printer cartridges to landfill every minute? Recycling cartridges is another way you can help our planet. To find your nearest retail drop off location, visit cartridges.planetark.org or call the ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ Hotline on 1800 24 24 73.
When purchasing a new computer, be sure to ask for energy efficient components. Reconnected stock a range of components that minimise carbon emissions.
